In 1227, the mighty Genghis Khan—terror of empires, conqueror of continents—was no more. You’d expect a warrior of his stature to fall in a blaze of glory, sword in hand, atop a mountain of enemies. But no. Earlier theories suggested he died from injuries after falling off his horse, an infected wound, or even assassination. More recent scholars, however, point to something far less cinematic: the bubonic plague. Whatever the truth, his end was quietly unremarkable—unlike the legend he left behind.
