Immortality Lies in Lobsters?

  Open with LBRY

Who wants to live forever? Death and taxes, they say, are life’s only certainties. The ultra-rich seem to have wriggled out of taxes, so naturally their next target is death.

Enter George — a lobster off the coast of Maine, currently enjoying his 15th decade. While you and I are falling apart by middle age, George just keeps pinching along, seemingly ageless.

His secret? Telomerase.
Our cells age because every division shaves a little off the protective “caps” at the ends of our DNA, called telomeres. Eventually they get so short the cells turn into zombie husks that spew toxic signals, stir up chronic inflammation and, ultimately, kill us.

Lobsters, however, cheat. Their bodies are awash with telomerase, endlessly repairing those caps, sidestepping the cellular rot that makes us frail. They don’t grow weak, lose fertility, or shuffle off from old age.

They’re not immortal. But unlike us, they don’t die of being old.
