The bootleg industry was thriving. Mobs flooded underground speakeasies with illegally-produced liquor as people continued to do what they’d always done – drink.
Across New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, thousands died from drinking the poisoned booze. Rather than address the issue and potentially save lives, the government doubled down, adding yet more toxic substances to the alcohol denaturing list.
